If you’re about to get cataract surgery we’re sure you’re going through a few emotions. On one hand, you’re probably a little nervous about the surgery but on the other hand – it’s also got to come as a relief. Trust us – when you’re done, it’ll feel like a whole new view of the world. But before you get surgery, you’ll have to decide on what kind of artificial lens you want.

Today, we’re going to discuss a few things for you to consider when choosing a new IOL (intraocular lens). They come in several varieties, so before you go under the knife, you’ll have to make a choice. Hopefully, these tips make that choice come into a little bit clearer focus. Let’s jump right in.

How much do you want to spend?

Price can be a consideration when it comes to IOLs. Surgery is usually covered by insurance, but only monofocal IOLs are covered. They’re the most basic IOL. If you wear glasses now, you’ll probably need to wear them once you’re out of surgery. They only correct for one distance.

If you’re willing to spend some more money out of pocket, then you’ll have better options. For some , the price of a premium lens is worth the clearer vision; but also shouldn’t be the only factor in your decision.

Do you want to rely on glasses?

Look, there’s nothing wrong with relying on glasses to see. And if that’s the case, then monofocal iOLs will certainly do the trick. But if you’d like to ditch your glasses, premium lenses are probably what you’re going to have to invest in. Multifocal lenses will make it much easier to see up close.

If you have astigmatisms, consider a Toric IOL

One premium lens is called a toric IOL. They correct for astigmatisms. If your astigmatism is minor, toric IOLs will correct them completely. Talk to your doctor about torics and if they might be able to help you. It’s a good option if you’re looking to improve your vision dramatically after surgery.

What kind of lifestyle do you want?

Really at the end of the day, this is what matters most. Are you active? What kinds of things do you enjoy? Do you want to see effortlessly? All these are questions you need to ask yourself before making any decisions – and is a train of thought that should drive your ultimate decision.

There’s a lot to consider out there. Hopefully, these tips make it a little easier to set up a framework that will allow you to find an answer about what you’d ultimately want. Take your time, be thoughtful and of course – ask your doctor lots and lots of questions. Good luck!
